Apu Axed From ‘The Simpsons’ After 30 Years Due To Racial Stereotyping Fox

The Simpsons’ Apu Nahasapeemapetilon has long been a favourite character of some people, running his Kwik-E-Mart with pride and no-bullsh**.

Now, after his long stint on the show, producers are set to axe his character following backlash over his racial stereotyping.

Producer Adi Shankar has claimed to verify the news from many sources, with the decision coming after Hari Kondabolu's documentary The Problem With Apu in 2017, which focused on how heavily the show might stereotype those in the South Asian community.

The doco outlined that the stereotyping of Apu was insensitive and damaging to the representation of the South-Asian community in America and their culture.

The actor who plays Apu, Hank Azaria, had already threatened to leave the show due to the controversy.

Adi revealed to IndieWire, "They’re going to drop the Apu character altogether.

"They aren’t going to make a big deal out of it, or anything like that, but they’ll drop him altogether just to avoid the controversy."

Adi had wanted to crowd fund a script that would, in a way, save Apu’s character, producing an episode that raised all the issues of stereotyping given in the documentary, and updating his character for today’s audience.

"If you are a show about cultural commentary and you are too afraid to comment on the culture, especially when it’s a component of the culture you had a hand in creating, then you are a show about cowardice.

"It’s not a step forward, or step backwards, it’s just a massive step sideways. After having read all these wonderful scripts, I feel like sidestepping this issue doesn’t solve it when the whole purpose of art, I would argue, is to bring us together."

Only time will tell if Apu’s character will be saved and given an updated spin.
