Mammoth Screen and ITV will be bringing Pride and Prejudice back to TV screens in a new tele-series.
The company which brought us Poldark will be bringing the story to life once again, 22 years after the most beloved TV adaptation of the Jane Austin classic, starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, aired.
The new script will be written by Nina Raine, who says this will be a darker look at the story.
“Pride And Prejudice is actually a very adult book, much less bonnet-y than people assume," she told the Radio Times. “I hope I do justice to Austen's dark intelligence - sparkling, yes, but sparkling like granite."
Mammoth managing director, Damien Timmer, also told the online publication, “In this age of the box set – with audiences loving to binge on complex, serialised dramas – it feels absolutely right to reassess the great classics. Every generation needs its own adaptation of this perfect novel.
“Nina Raine is one of the most gifted writers working today, and her wit and emotional intelligence make her the perfect match for Jane Austen. She’s a devoted fan of the book, but she’s never seen any previous adaptations – so pleasingly the novel only exists in her imagination”
The announcement has been met with mixed reactions, with some excited for the story to be told in a new way, and others calling for another classic novel to be adapted for once.
They are yet to reveal when the series will air, but we’re definitely interested to see how this classic will be retold this time.
But will they be able to shoot a scene as iconic as this one? We’re not so sure…
