Your Mates Who Are In Europe May Not Make It Home As A Huge Volcano Might Be About To Explode!

All your mates who are in Europe at the moment could be about to get quite a big shock, with reports circling that Iceland’s giant Katla volcano is showing signs that it will erupt.

If it does erupt, it will come 8 years after the Eyjafjallajokull eruption that disrupted flights across the world for over two weeks.

At this stage, Katla is sending out ‘highly hazardous’ carbon dioxide which suggests its magma chambers are filling up. Early reports, that were pushed in the Geophysical Research Letters journal have found that it is currently releasing between 12 and 24 kilotons of carbon dioxide every day, which makes it one of the ‘largest volcanic sources of CO2 on the planet.’

Sarah Barsotti, co-ordinator for volcanic hazards at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, said: “There is no way of telling when it will erupt, just that it will.”

Only time will tell if your mates who have been annoying over the European summer will actually make it home.
