One of Townsville’s most historic swimming spots, the Tobruk Memorial Baths, is about to be revitalised, with the project to go out to tender this weekend.
The refurbishment for the Tobruk pool will include decommissioning the existing 50-metre and toddler pools and replacing them with brand new pools.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the project to upgrade Tobruk Memorial Baths is part of the almost $400 million infrastructure spend in 2018-19.
“The Tobruk Memorial Baths redevelopment is a major commitment Council made as part of the almost $400 million infrastructure spend in the Budget handed down last year,” Cr Hill said.
“Council has committed to infrastructure projects across the city that will improve liveability for all residents and visitors.”
Infrastructure Committee Chair Cr Mark Molachino said Council is dedicated to providing the community with world-class infrastructure.
“The Tobruk Memorial Baths are over 60 years old and in need of redevelopment to ensure residents and visitors can keep enjoying the facility,” Cr Molachino said.
“The redevelopment will include a new 50m pool and toddler pool, a refurbishment of the toilets and showers, a new shade structure and an updated filtration system.”
The Tobruk Memorial Baths were opened to the public in the 1950’s and named in commemoration of the Australian servicemen that took part in the Siege of Tobruk.
Local Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said the Tobruk Memorial Baths have a long history in Townsville.
“The Tobruk Memorial Baths were constructed just after World War II and are heritage listed thanks to the cultural significance of the facility and the beautiful façade of the building,” Cr Greaney said.
“This is a really important facility for locals and that’s why Council is investing in revitalising the Tobruk Memorial Baths.
“I’m looking forward to this redevelopment and seeing how locals react to the improvements and enjoy the new upgraded facilities.”
The tender process opens on Saturday 20 April and will close on Wednesday 22 May.
The construction timeline for the project was pushed back due to the unprecedented monsoon to ensure the community did not lose access to another swimming facility during this period.
