Ahead of Australia Day, the Baw Baw Shire Citizen of the Year has been announced for 2019.

Local volunteer Peter Ware received the accolade for his work with the Friends of Drouin Trees Group, Meals on Wheels, reading to people with limited vision, and volunteer gardening for older people. Mr Ware was also recognised for his role as Secretary on the Committee for Drouin.

Warragul Farmers Market was named Community Event of the Year at the ceremony; Lynn Jones received the Cultural Achievement Award, and the Australia Day Medallion went to Michael Brennan. 

Official Australia Day Ambassador Paul Wheelton AM KSJ was a guest speaker during the event at West Gippsland Arts Centre.
