In the great words of Mary Poppins, 'let's go fly a kite'.
On Sunday September 30, be prepared to look up to the sky as colourful kite displays spread their wings and dance across the Gold Coast.
The Jewel International Kite Festival will use the iconic Pacific Ocean along Surfers Paradise Beach as their natural backdrop to display an array of visually stimulating kites.
While there's no official memory of how or when the popular hobby first came about, we do know that for thousands of years (or so) many have perfected the art of the sky-high spectacle.
While the rest of us have just mastered awing at pretty things in the sky...
Both of which will be at the event this weekend - from nationally and internationally renowned kite masters and professionals to those who just want to experience the wonders of the craft, this family fun day out has something for everyone. And, better yet, it won't cost you a cent to join in on the fun.
Attempt to build your own flying creation with one of the kite making workshops, delve into the endless entertainment and fun fitness activities or sample tempting food trucks set up along the beach side.
From dawn to dusk locals will be flying high all leading to the grand sunset finale where everyone is encouraged to join the lantern conga line in a spectacular parade and watch fireworks light up the night from 6:30pm.
Participants are encouraged to plan their journey ahead with limited street parking available, so jump on the G:Link and walk a short 550 metres or take an easy stroll to the event from Broadbeach.
The International Kite Festival will be held at the Jewel beachfront (34 Old Burleigh Road, Surfers Paradise) on Sunday 30 September from 11am 'til 7pm.
