A contractor critically injured in a mining accident near Singleton on Tuesday, has sadly passed away in John Hunter Hospital.

The 53-year-old haulage driver was hit in the head by the tailgate of his truck at the Rixs Creek Mine.

He was flown to hospital bu the Westpac Rescue Helicopter with critical head injuries, however he died overnight.

The Bloomfield Group says it's offering support to his family and colleagues.

The Minister for Industry, Resources and Energy Anthony Roberts also offered his condolences.

The Resources Regulator is investigating the incident and will release an initial incident report in 14 days.

The Resources Regulator will cooperate with the Coronial inquiry.
