A woman has survived a horror crash near Maitland, where she was thrown through the windscreen of her car.

The 36 year old was found by a passing motorist lying in front of her Ford Falcon, which had crashed into a pole on Old Maitland Road at Bishops Bridge just before 9pm last night.

She was treated by paramedics before being flown to John Hunter Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

The woman remains in a serious but stable condition.
