The Gold Coast is bracing for potentially heavy rainfall from tonight as most of Queensland experiences wild weather.

The Bureau of Meteorology is warning that flash flooding is a real possibility in some locations across the city over the next 48 hours.

Up to 50 millimetres was expected to fall on Friday night, with rain and possible thunderstorms expected all the way through to Monday.

It comes as Far North Queensland residents prepare for the destruction of Tropical Cyclone Owen, which was set to make landfall as a Category Four storm sometime in the next 24 hours.
