A wanted man's been arrested after leading police on a pursuit from Tomago to Beresfield.

Officers were patrolling Nelson Bay Road at Williamtown at 6:30 Saturday night, when they spotted the man, who's wanted on warrants, driving a Ford Falcon.

They lost sight of the car, but spotted it again on Cabbage Tree Road and gave chase.

The pursuit travelled along the Pacific Highway and New England Highway, before being terminated on John Renshaw Drive at Beresfield due to dangerous driving.

The vehicle was later found dumped on Queens Wharf Road at Morpeth.

Police searched the area with the help of the dog unit and tracked down the 27 year old in a rural farm shed.

He was taken to the John Hunter to be treated for a cut to his arm.

The man remains under police guard at hospital. Charges are expected to be laid.
