WA skilled migration list slashed

Just 18 occupations are left on the updated version of WA'S skilled migration list.

The government tore up the previous list, which contained 178 eligible job titles, on its first day of government.

The new list is now only made up of occupations for medical professionals.

"On the first day of the new government, we committed to ripping up the skilled migration occupation list - which we did," said Premier Mark McGowan.

"So we've removed from the list refrigeration mechanics, engineers, nurses, teachers, firemen, plumbers and the like."

The plan is aimed at giving WA workers the best leg up over migrants to fill roles currently up for grabs.

"We're making sure that all West Australians will have those opportunities, first and foremost." Mr McGowan said.

"This is making sure West Australian trades people get West Australian jobs first."
