A young child is recovering in hospital in Western Australia after being diagnosed with meningococcal disease, bringing the number of cases reported in the state so far this year to 26.

The child is the sixth case of serogroup B to date in 2018.

Meningococcal disease in WA peaked at 86 cases in 2000 and fell to a low of 16 cases in 2013, but is increasing again due to the emergence of new virulent strains of serogroup W, and to a lesser extent serogroup Y.
