Urgent calls for a local highway stretch to be upgraded, are coming from the Civil Contractors Federation of South Australia.

They want to see the Federal and State Government commit $1 Billion to upgrade what they've labelled the "death trap" of 250 kilometres of the Princes highway between Meningie and Millicent.

The CCF say this particular section of the road has claimed 17 lives in the past 5 years and it's time the government stopped putting off maintenance.

CEO Phil Sutherland says at the moment it's just not good enough.
