Traralgon-born man Nathan Missen has faced the Supreme Court after being charged with the murder of his father Mark Missen.

Charged for bashing his father to death and then dumping his body into an old goldmine in Whroo, Mr Missen has been sentenced to 21 years in jail.

Supreme Court Justice Jane Dixon described the act a murder of "appalling brutality".

Nathan Missen faces a non-parole period of 17 years.
