A truck has caused chaos for drivers heading towards Sydney Airport, after getting stuck in a nearby tunnel.

The over-height truck has reportedly hit the sprinkler system inside the tunnel on General Holmes Drive while travelling southbound.

The incident happened at roughly 12pm, with all lanes reopening just before 2pm.

With two of four southbound lanes closed for the lengthy period, traffic queues got back to nearly 4km on General Holmes Drive.

Traffic remains heavy in that area, as well as down to Foreshore Road.

Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time as the traffic has not completely cleared.

Repairs to the sprinkler system are understood to be taking place tonight.
