There are major traffic delays on Adelaide’s South Eastern Freeway after a truck carrying thousands of chickens crashed, spilling animals across the road.

The semi-trailer jack-knifed on the freeway just before 3.30am, blocking all city-bound lanes just before the Crafers exit.

Crews are currently on site trying to clear the carnage.

The truck had was carrying 3,500 chickens.

City-bound traffic is being diverted down Upper Sturt Road or via Greenhill Road.

“Please avoid the area if possible or allow extra time to get to work this morning,” SA Police said.

Trucks trying to get through have been forced to queue up for kilometres.
