Townsville’s being told to brace for some rain over the next couple of days.

The Bureau of Meteorology putting out the warning as Ex-Tropical Cyclone Penny tracks closer to the coast.

This morning the tropical low was sitting around 100 km off the coast of Bowen and is expected to move further inland and north from this afternoon.

Meteorologist Gordon Banks said Townsville could be in for some big totals.

“I think over the next two days we could potentially have up to a couple of hundred millimetres over the Townsville area”.

Mr Banks said there is still quite a lot of variation but expects a minimum of 100 millimetres to fall.

The latest weather advice from the Bureau of Meteorology has included Townsville in the Severe Weather warning area.

Despite that Mr Banks said the winds from the system have died down.

“There’s no chance of it developing it anything stronger”.
