Spoiler alert if you haven’t finished watching Penn Badgley’s new series You on Netflix. Seriously, stop reading. This will ruin the show.

There has been a big increase in a very unexpected Google search term related to the creepy series You

If you’ve watched the intense show, you’ll know that it is centred around Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) and his obsession with an aspiring writer called Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail). Things for Guinevere and her friends don’t exactly work out for the best once Joe enters their lives.

Which brings us to the newly popular search term. And we’re going to assume you’ve watched the show now. It’s time to go deep.

Remember when Joe was hiding out in Peach’s house, and had to urinate in a jar? Later on the private investigator hired to look into Peach’s death tells Joe that they found a DNA sample in the house and will be getting it tested. Joe instantly remembers that jar, which he left on a shelf.

Well the search term “Does urine have dna” has had a spectacular rise on Google since You dropped on Netflix! It seems as though everyone else has the same question as Joe – does urine actually contain DNA?

There was a little spike in search results around November 11 that corresponds with Yous finale airing on Lifetime in the United States, and a huge spike in searches in January just after the series appeared on Netflix.

Here’s the answer from the University of Arizona, in case you needed to know:

“Any body tissue that has not been degraded is a potential source of DNA. ... Urine itself does not contain DNA, but it may contain epithelial cells, which do contain DNA. Most healthy individuals, however, do not excrete epithelial cells in their urine.”

The jar doesn’t actually come back into play in the show, and Joe seemingly gets away with all his murders. However they’ve already renewed You for a second series – so maybe it will have an impact down the line!
