The Rugby World Cup could be coming to Newcastle!

The government is on the lookout for cities to host the Cup in 2027, and Newcastle could be one of them.

Australia is the only country so far to put its hand up to host what is the third biggest sporting event in the world. It could generate $2 billion and attract 200,000 international visitors while creating 1300 jobs.

Newcastle MP Sharon Claydon says she hopes it gets the ball rolling on the Broadmeadow Sporting Precinct.

"I certainly hope this gives renewed interest to the New South Wales government to ensure that the sporting precinct is underway and completed in time. I think there are opportunities to ensure that our facilities are the very best they can be," Sharon Claydon said.

Time can only tell if Australia secures the event in 2027. The winner will be announced in May 2022.
