The Fire Danger Period has officially begun for District 18; covering Mildura Rural City Council, Swan Hill Rural City Council municipalities.

The CFA have made the call, the season starting earlier than usual due to warmer conditions and dry weather.

October 15th is the earliest date the Fire Danger Period has been introduced in the four municipalities since 1995.

A written permit will be required to burn off grass, undergrowth, weeds or other vegetation during the period.

Lighting a fire in the open without a permit is an offence, and can bring a penalty of over $19,000 and/or 12 months imprisonment.

On days of total fire ban, no fires can be lit for the declared district for that day - this applies irrespective of the Fire Restriction status for a given municipality.
