City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder Mayor John Bowler has criticized councillors decision to allow shops to trade every Sunday.

During a debate at Monday night’s council meeting, Mayor John Bowler warned the damage the move would have on the city’s family and social life.

Despite this, councillors voted 7-2 in favour of allowing shops to open from 9am to 2pm on Sundays.

The general consensus of all councillors was that while there was desire in the community for Sunday trading, there was none for 24/7 operating hours, with concerns about antisocial behaviour if the major supermarkets were open 24 hours-a-day.

As of yet, there is no set date for when Sunday trading will start in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, with the council needing to make a submission seeking the approval of State Commerce and Industrial Relations Minister Bill Johnston.

Councillors believe that allowing the major chains to open on Sunday was crucial to boosting foot traffic for all businesses.
