An $8,000 fine has been issued to a Leongatha transport company over some spilled milk.

A Pollution Abatement Notice was issued to Peter Stoitse Transport by the Victorian Environmental Protection Authority after the group was given a 30-day period to fix an issue where milk was being spilled as it was pumped from tankers, and the company failed to rectify.

EPA Gippsland Regional Manager Jessica Bandiera says spillage from the dairy industry is more of a threat than many people think, as the product can potentially find its way into nearby creeks, streams, rivers and storm water drains.
