The news of Big W closing 30 of its stores across the country took everyone by surprise and disappointment – none more than the residents of the Southern Downs where a Big W distribution centre is housed, it will close in 2023.

Following the announcement made on Monday Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie has urged residents not to 'overreact'.

Cr Dobie said four years' notice of the impending closure would give council a significant amount of time to plan and find another industry to draw to the region.

Mayor Dobie said that the closure was disappointing and a blow to the region but there will be more jobs coming on line into the future.

She went on to say that they would like to see Big W and Woolworths look at how they re-skill those staff so they have opportunity and stay in the region.

Cr Dobie said the closure would have a flow-on affect but the council was working with the Warwick Chamber of Commerce and State Government to liaise with businesses that work alongside the DC to ensure they have transition plans in place.
