AFL fans have taken to Twitter following security measures taken at Deakin Reserve in which water bottles were confiscated during 38-degree heat.

The officials confiscated unsealed containers, claiming to be following AFL orders, during the Richmond vs Melbourne JLT Community Series match on Sunday.

While water bottles were available for purchase from $3 inside the venue, the AFL Fans Association also claimed via Twitter that security was discouraging the use of umbrellas "despite minimal shade".

In response to the outrage, an AFL spokesman told Herald Sun that the actions of Deakin Reserve officials was a reserve rule, not the AFL's, adding, “We heard about what was going on and the AFL stepped in accordingly."
