One person has died and two people are seriously injured after a head on crash near the Singleton Army Base.

Two sedans collided on the Golden Highway at around 7:40am Thursday morning.

The 63 year old male driver of one of the cars died at the scene.

Two other people were trapped in the wreckage for some time.

The 53 year old woman and 32 year old man have both been airlifted to John Hunter Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

It's been a horror 12 hours on the Hunter's roads, with a 19 year old Rutherford man killed after a crash at Bishops Bridge last night.
