The weather might be looking perfect for Christmas but residents will need to get through a sweltering day on the Gold Coast today.

Heatwave-like conditions were expected to sweep across South-East Queensland on Friday pushing the mercury as high as 37 degrees in places like Nerang and Coomera.

While closer to the coastline it was expected to reach 35 degrees.

Brisbane by comparison was expecting temperatures in the high 30s, while those in Ipswich and Beaudesert will sweat through heat in the low 40s.

Meteorologist Jess Gardner from the Bureau of Meteorology said there was also a chance of a severe thunderstorm in the afternoon to evening, causing humidity levels to soar.

"There is definitely a chance of a thunderstorm and there's even the possibility of severe storms in the south-east," said Gardner.

"With that rain it would create some extra humidity and make things a little bit warmer feeling."

The heat is due to a surface trough of hot air blowing in from the west.
