The mother of a five-year-old girl who was killed by a truck on the Central Coast has paid tribute to her "kindergarten superstar".

Mariasusana Vaafusuaga, known as Sana, was hit on Hastings Rd at Rocky Point,  near Wyong, on Wednesday afternoon after stepping off the bus on the first day  of term two.

It's believed her mother, Salafai Loimata, who was waiting to pick up Sana and  her older sister, witnessed the accident from across the road.

Ms Loimata on Thursday morning shared photos on social media of her oldest  daughters in their school uniforms and posted "Luv u Sana" and "Luv u s much  baby."

Sana started kindergarten at Tacoma Public School in early February and within  weeks had won three awards, including one for "being a kindergarten superstar".

Family members sang hymns at a roadside memorial on Thursday with Sana's aunt,  Malili Foini, saying her sister was "doing OK".

'We come together as a family because we don't want to cry and we don't want to  be sad ... because we don't want to affect the kids," she told reporters.

"Us adults, we can handle (it), but the kids - I don't think they can handle it  very well."

Students and teachers at Tacoma Public School have been offered counselling,  principal Jeanette Dillon said in a statement on Facebook.

"Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the family for their devastating  loss," she said.

"Our school community is shattered by this news."
