Wildlife carers hold grave fears for the Port Stephens koala population following the devastating bushfire at Salt Ash over the weekend.

Fire swept through more than 2,000ha of bushland near Lemon Tree Passage Road, which is a popular breeding ground for koalas.

Simone Oreno from Port Stephens Koalas is fearing the worst.

"Unfortunately the fires have come through too hot and too fast, and we do know the fires have burnt through some pristine koala habitat...so we're quite devastated," she said.

If you see a wild animal in the affected area and you’re not sure of its well-being, call 0418 628 483.
