While there may still be a bit of fuss about the plastic bag ban, a recycling company has created bitumen for roads using recycled material.

The Old Princess Highway in Engadine will now consist of 530,000 recycled plastic bags, 12,000 toner printer cartridges and 168,000 glass bottles per kilometre.

This is the first NSW road to be made of rubbish, with the new technology helping ease Australia's waste crisis.

'Plastiphalt' will see the recycled material mixed in with asphalt.

Victoria's Hume City Council lead the Australian pilot of the technology in May this year.
