The Federal Government will fund increased safety on roads in the Mid West, with an upgrade to rest stops as part of the Driver Reviver campaign.

A total of $7.2 million in federal funding will be accessible to road workers, including areas across the Gascoyne.

An RAC spokesperson said one of the biggest causes of accidents is fatigue.

"Fatigue is absolutely a silent killer, driving tired it slows down your reaction time and reduces your alertness as well."

"It can be just as dangerous as drink driving, for example if you've been awake for 17 to 19 hours your reaction time is similar to that of a driver with a blood alcohol level of .05."

The funding for road safety will be used across the nation, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Barnaby Joyce said the upgrades will ensure safety and full recovery.

“One accident, one injury, one death is one too many and no family should have to endure the loss of a loved one on our roads,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.

“Driver Reviver sites provide a place for safety and fatigue breaks for drivers and their passengers. The upgrades we are funding are aimed at making rest sites more welcoming and comfortable for drivers, to help them overcome fatigue and ensure they reach their destination safely.”
