Data from RACQ Insurance has revealed vehicle vandalism is on the rise in Queensland.

The motoring club says insurance claims for intentional damage like slashed tyres, keyed cars and rocks being thrown through windows has increased 10 per cent in the past year.

"There has also been a significant number of claims for footprints and dents, but also some quite unusual claims like sugar being put into fuel pumps and even cars being painted a new colour," said spokesperson Renee Smith.

Smith says unfortunately, the perpetrators are often not found although they've heard a few cases of revenge attacks by scorned ex lovers.

The club has updated their list of suburb hot spots for vandalism, with Southport coming in top position.

Fortitude Valley was the only Brisbane suburb to make the list, coming in a number four.

Smith says damage to cars often happens while it's parked in the driveway of a home or out on the street.
"You can reduce you risk by parking in a well-lit carport or secure garage."

Here's the top 10 Queensland suburbs for malicious damage claims:

1. Southport
2. Bundaberg
3. Toowoomba
4. Fortitude Valley
5. Cairns
6. Caboolture
7. Surfers Paradise
8. Maroochydore
9. Nerang
10. Rockhampton
