The new strain of calicivirus-- known as RHDV21 K5 -- will be released at over 150 sites across the state this week.

While there's no cure to help pet rabbits who become infected in Central Victoria -- owners have time to vaccinate against the virus and protect them before the deadly strain spreads across the country.

Symptoms of calicivirus include a loss of appetite in your domestic rabbit -- along with lethargy -- bleeding from the nose and mouth.

Speak to your local vet for more details about the calicivirus vaccine.
