With overseas travel off the cards, there's a growing push to lift restrictions for fully vaccinated Aussies, providing greater freedom for domestic travel.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is behind the push for states to drive up their vaccination rates, allowing exemptions from snap lookdowns and border closures for those who have had their Covid jabs.

Meanwhile, pressure continues to mount on the PM to lock in a date to re-open international borders.

But states and territories say they want higher vaccination numbers before opening-up to overseas travellers.

Fully vaccinated Aussies could be exempt from border closures and restrictions

As politicians debate the issue, experts in the field have varied opinions, but effectively all want the same outcome.

Jane Holton from the Covid Commission told Seven that "if you look at what's going on the United States and Britain, once you get a significant proportion of your population fully vaccinated you can change requirements around restricting travel".

At the same time, the President of the Australian Medical Association, Dr Omar Korshid told the ABC, he supports the PM "setting a time because that's going to give us all the motivation to go out and get the vaccine"

"Whereas, if it’s some indeterminate point in the future when everyone's vaccinated, it doesn't really give that vaccine program that push it needs to make sure its complete", he said.

In the meantime, a ban remains on overseas travel from Australia, unless you get an exemption.
