The passenger of a vehicle that smashed into a pole on the Burwood Highway in Burwood has died.

Emergency services arrived at the horrific scene around 1:20 am on Wednesday after reports came in. The driver of the allegedly stolen vehicle fled the scene before police arrived and the passenger is yet to be identified.

A manhunt is underway this morning.

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the crash, have dashcam footage or know the driver's whereabouts to come forward.

It’s understood the car is the same one that was stolen in the Reservoir area between July 15th or 16th.

The Burwood Highway has been closed to city-bound traffic between Station Street and Middleborough Road. As the investigation continues, drivers are told to use Highbury Road or Canterbury Road and allow extra time.
