Police have been led on a wild pursuit from Cameron Park to West Wallsend, which ended with the car plunging into a small dam.

The chase started after the Holden Commodore ute was allegedly driven towards officers in Craighall Street just before 11pm Sunday night.

The officers were forced to jump out of the way.

They pursued the driver to West Wallsend, where the ute went into bushland, over an embankment and into the dam.

The man and his passenger tried to flee on foot but were tracked down by a police dog.

The driver's facing court today on several charges.
