Pimpama residents concerned about the crime rates in the northern suburbs have taken matters into their own hands.

A group, made up of around 20 people many of whom have security or military backgrounds, has been set up to patrol the streets at night, in order to deter criminals.

The Pimpama Civilian Response Team is encouraging residents who notice anything odd in their neighbourhood to get in touch through the Pimpama CRT Facebook group.

However, one of the founding members, who has chosen to remain anonymous, emphasised that residents should always call police first in an emergency.

"As soon as they message our page an automatic response will come up saying 'if you are in danger, if you need police assistance, please call 000 now.'"

"We are not the police, we're just here to be a deterrent, do drive-bys, and make the area safer," he said.
