A loud 'bang' caught the attention of Qantas passengers travelling from Auckland to Sydney yesterday after a mayday call was issued mid-flight.

The Boeing 737 finally touched down at Sydney Airport just before 3:30pm EDT, with the passengers on the flight greeted by emergency services and ground staff.

Hit Network hosts Bec & Soda spoke with Simone, a South Australian local on the flight who is now safe and sound at home.

"It was only when we were on the ground that they actually said 'yeah we lost an engine'", Simone said.

"I think it was a good call that the captain didn't say anything because could you imagine a plane full of panicked passengers?"

We will know more about the incident once the aircraft has been assessed by a Qantas engineer.
