Relief could be on the way for the overcrowded schools west of Maitland.
St Philips Christian College is looking at buying a big chunk of council land at Aberglasslyn to potentially build a K-12 school, catering for 1200 students.
Deputy Mayor Ken Wethered believes another school is desperately needed in the area, with many including Rutherford High, Rutherford Primary, St Patrick's Primary and St Josephs High in Lochinvar "bursting at the seams".
The land has been available for quite some time and the Deputy Mayor says it's great to see some progress.
"Several people have looked at it including the state government and the Catholic education system," said the Deputy Mayor. "St Phillips have come along and they're interested, so we're very keen to see what they come forward with."
Councillor Phillip Penfold posted on social media on Tuesday, revealing that the Christian College has eight weeks to investigate securing Lot 1490, Weblands Street Rutherford and Lot 14 Liddell Avenue, Aberglasslyn for a school.
The Australian Bureau of Statistic's latest report into population growth in regional New South Wales noted that Maitland experienced some of the largest growth in the state in the 2015-16 period.
