Five have been people for suspected carbon monoxide poisoning after using a barbecue inside last night in Campbellfield.

It's believed the barbecue was used indoors for four hours before paramedics were called to the house at about 10.45 pm.

Paramedics treated three teenagers and two adults in their 50's for headaches and nausea, taking them to The Royal Melbourne and The Northern Hospitals in stable conditions.

Everyone using a barbecue should be cautious about cooking in a confined space.

The Victorian Government recommends the following tips to avoid hazards while using a gas barbecue.

•Use safe, refilled gas cylinders that are within the 10-year test period
•Regularly check the gas hose/pipe connections are tight and in good condition
•Get into the habit of checking for gas leaks using soapy water
•Never use home-made gas hoses or connections
•Store gas cylinders upright and away from heat – never store them in cars
•Never barbecue indoors - always ensure adequate ventilation
•Limit alcohol consumption when operating a barbecue
•Keep a fire extinguisher or fire blanket nearby
