To protect against terrorism

Morwell Police will have access to specialist long-arm rifles as early as next year.

As one of only four regional stations to secure the weapons, they will assist Morwell officers in protecting Victorians from major incidents and the risk of terrorism.

Police Minister Lisa Neville says the government is giving police the power and tools to tackle emerging risks including lone wolf attacks. "These new long-arm rifles will ensure police can respond quickly and effectively to critical incidents, particularly in regional Victoria.”

The roll-out will put the rifles in the hands of about 800 police from the Operations Response Unit as well as regional police who will be trained to use them in day to day duties.
