Work on a massive redevelopment in Newcastle's east end is one step closer.

Iris Capital has lodged a D-A for four blocks of land in Hunter Street Mall bordering the former David Jones building and Newcomen Street.

The blueprints will include one, two and three bedroom apartments as well as ground floor cafes and retail stores.

Iris Capital CEO Sam Arnaout says he's keen to create what's being labelled an "urban village" in the city's east end.

“This is one of the most exciting times in Newcastle’s rich history,”

“The people of Newcastle have watched its CBD decay for several decades and we have a real opportunity to create a legacy for Novocastrians for generations to come.”

“The East End site is completely unique in its orientation and will be the showpiece of Newcastle’s continued rejuvenation."
