A quick-thinking man has saved his girlfriend's life after she was washed into the water at the notorious Snapper Point rocks overnight.

The pair was fishing in the Munmorah State Conservation Area around 7pm, when the 26 year old was hit by a large wave.

Her boyfriend tossed her a life ring, which she was able to hold onto until the Westpac Rescue Chopper winched her to safety, taking her to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition suffering hypothermia and lacerations.

She was released a short time later.
