Police are investigating a fatal crash on the M1, Somersby this morning.
About 10.20am (Tuesday 2 May 2017), emergency services were called to the motorway, about one kilometre north of the Kariong turnoff, following reports of a crash.
Initial investigations suggest a van and a truck travelling north crashed in the breakdown lane.
The male driver of the van died at the scene. The passenger, a man, was treated at the scene by ambulance paramedics before being airlifted to hospital in a critical condition.
The driver of the truck was not injured during the incident.
A crime scene has been established and investigations are continuing.
