After a successful Roma Relay For Life in 2016, organisers are calling on the community to lend a hand in the fight against cancer once again!

Cancer Council Queensland is seeking enthusiastic volunteers who are passionate about giving back, to continue the success of the inspirational event in 2017.

Those interested in volunteering in the lead-up to the event, or wanting to find out more information, can attend a meeting on Thursday, June 15 from 5.30pm at Roma Bowls Club (35 Lovell Street, Roma).

Committee member Stephanie Kay encouraged locals to join Relay For Life and be part of the inspiring event for locals affected by the disease.

“Relay For Life is a great opportunity for the community to unite in the fight against cancer,” Ms Kay said.

“It is a chance to acknowledge the impact cancer has on our lives and pay tribute to those who have been affected.

“We rely on community support to help make Relay For Life a success each year and the committee would love to see some new faces and fresh ideas for our 2017 event.

“Whether you can volunteer a little or lot of time, we would love to have you on board.”

A bowel cancer survivor, Ms Kay has been involved with Roma Relay For Life for the past two years and was the Face of Relay in 2015.

Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan encouraged locals to attend the Roma Relay For Life community meeting and get involved in shaping the 2017 event.

“If you’re passionate about cancer prevention, early detection, research and support, or are looking for a way to give back in the community – we would love to have you join us,” Ms McMillan said.

“We are looking for people with plenty of energy and enthusiasm to help make our 2017 event memorable.”

Ms McMillan said local support made a vital difference to the charity’s work.

“Around 2040 people are diagnosed with cancer in South West Queensland each year – Relay For Life enables us to support them,” she said.

“Cancer Council Queensland provides support for locals affected by cancer, investing in ongoing research and support programs for those in need.

“Attending the community meeting and participating in Relay For Life is a great way to support these endeavours and help make a vital difference right here in the local community.”

Relay For Life is an 18 hour event involving teams of up to 15 people keeping a baton moving in a relay-style walk or run overnight, in support of Queenslanders affected by cancer.
