New statistics from the RSPCA have revealed Latrobe Valley is in the top 10 for regions with the highest number of animal cruelty reports.

In 2017-2018, the reports of animal cruelty have soared to over 10,000. For the third year in a row, the most concerning occurrences for the organisation were situations where animals had insufficient food, water or shelter.

Cruelty and neglect towards dogs, cats and horses made the majority of the reports.

CEO of the RSPCA, Dr Liz Walker, told Hit FM News this morning there is plenty of work to do when it comes to raising awareness of animal welfare. "To have animals being treated in circumstances where there are basic things not being provided is a real concern. So we want to use this information to have a conversation with the local government and the community about how we can do better".
