It's up for debate Monday night

A Lake Macquarie councillor wants our national anthem to be changed slightly.

Brian Adamthwaite believes 'young and free' in the first verse should be replaced with 'strong and free' to recognise our indigenous heritage.

He's calling for Mayor Kay Fraser to write to PM Malcolm Turnbull to ask if the change can be made, with the matter to be debated by council on Monday night.

Councillor Adamthwaite believes it's an issue a lot of people are passionate about.

"It seems to ignore the fact that we've got 50,000 years of first Australian heritage behind us, and I believe by changing the word from 'young' to 'strong' we then encompass the richness of 50,000 years of our history."
