A man has died after being hit by a train in Sydney's south, with reports he may have been running across the tracks after allegedly spray-painting a stationary train.

Believed to be in his mid-twenties, authorities think the man was vandalising the carriage when he was hit by an oncoming train.

The man has yet to be formally identified, while services had to be suspended with passengers transferred to buses.

Emergency services were called to Kingsgrove Railway Station just after midnight, investigations continue.
