The Federal Government has shown its support of the world’s largest medicinal farm, granting the enterprise ‘major project status.’

The farm to be built near Wellcamp is expected to create 800 full-time jobs and 300 part-time.

The government estimates that the project by Canadian company Asterion, will inject $1 billion into the Toowoomba and Australian economies.  The project will receive more support through the approval processes.

The farm is expected to produce 500,000kg, or 500 tonnes of medicinal cannabis (a year from) 20,000 plants.  Medical cannabis is used to treat a range of conditions, including epilepsy, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, severe nausea and chronic pain.

Groom MP John McVeigh said the announcement the project had received major project status was a "big day in the history of Toowoomba and the Darling Downs."
