Sydney CBD’s largest movie cinema, Event Cinema on George Street, could soon be replaced with a 270-metre skyscraper.

The fate of the cinema is being determined by the Central Sydney Planning Committee today.

If the skyscraper is approved, only a boutique-sized cinema will be built in the new complex which will house 507-serviced apartments.

Already, 10 out of 17 submissions to the committee have raised concerns about the demolition of the iconic cinema.

Now an Event Cinema, the building was first launched as a Hoyts cinema complex in 1976 and at the time, was the biggest cinema complex in the world, with seven screens and 4,333 seats!

If removed, there will be no major movie cinemas in Sydney’s CBD.
