Western Australia's coastline will be provided a major boost, with state officials confirming funding allocated to help with the coastal erosion state-wide.

Coastal communities will receive an $18.5 million boost from the government, including the town of Exmouth, Port Beach and North Fremantle.

Transport and Planning Minister Rita Saffioti announced the funding plan to better protect WA beaches.

Saffioti says climate change has forced officials to act on the ever changing environment around us.

"We believe coastal erosion is a major issue for all of Australia, and in particular a place like WA where we have had significant changes in climate conditions and of course the continued storm surges." Saffioti explained.

Exmouth will be granted $90,000 to develop a coastal hazard risk plan.

Western Australian Government’s 2021-22 budget to manage the impacts of coastal erosion and protect the state’s coastline will spark necessary change for future generations.

Saffioti said "we have some of the most beautiful beaches here in Western Australia and they are loved by locals and tourists alike.

"However, they are very fragile environments and it's important we have the right programs in place to protect our coastline, now and into the future.”
